Vegas comes to Iowa!

With hotel rooms, suites and event space to meet every guest’s needs, Prairie Meadows is thrilled with their newest addition. The new $32M, 168-room hotel offers a more contemporary, Vegas-style look and connects directly to the casino by a second floor link.

New features include a salt water pool and whirlpool and self-cleaning windows. The windows use a special coating that utilizes sunlight to decompose dirt, which then washes off in the rain. We suspect some guests will be very interested to see these work. :)

Prairie Meadows is now taking online reservations for March 1, 2012 and beyond. Cities Edge Architects has been working on this project since its inception in 2009 and we are thrilled to see the completed product!

Learn About the Newest CIMS Version: CIMS 4.2

Ramaker & Associates released version 4.2 for both CIMS and CIMS Light last fall. This latest version brings many new features and enhancements to both products. The Customer Information form now warns you if a duplicate name is entered and also has the ability to track which customers are on your newsletter mailing list. A Sales Receipt for all spaces sold to one owner on the same date can now be generated from the Owner Tab of the Space Information form. When adding a deed to a space, the purchase cost is automatically calculated. In addition, the Search Spaces form allows you to locate both owner and co-owner names simultaneously. The list of reports is now alphabetized and improvements have been made to many reports, including the Burial Management and Military reports.

For users of CIMS, the ability to show roads on the overview map is also a recent addition. Your default cemetery settings will allow you to set the default degree of rotation for both your burials and markers. This means that when you are placing new burials, they are "pre-rotated." Another new feature is the enhanced Work Order report, which includes a map of the area that needs work.

Pump House Grand Opening

On Monday, Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom changed forever as the Pump House Waterpark officially opened to the public. As the only waterpark in Vermont, this brand-new, 20-million dollar, four-season family attraction boasts a host of awesome rides, exhilarating slides and state-of-the-art facilities designed to thrill kids of all ages.

An abundance of enjoyment can be found within the 40,000 square foot waterpark which is crowned by a state-of-the-art, fully retractable Open-Aire roof. Rides include the Double Barrel Flowrider surf wave, Big Falls Climbing Wall, Big River activity river and La Chute-the only indoor AquaLoop in the world. And to really get your heart pumping, La Chute's 300 foot long thrill ride begins with a 60-foot free fall! The waterpark also includes a mezzanine bar that overlooks all the action, and a well-stocked retail shop.

In addition to the fun and excitement of the new Pump House, the waterpark and soon-to-open Hotel Jay have allowed for an influx of new jobs that are expected to change the local economy for the better.

Kalahari Introduces Nation’s First Indoor SuperLOOP Slides

Since performing work on the first phase of the indoor waterpark in 1999, Ramaker & Associates has completed various additional phases over the past twelve years. Recently, we were asked to return to the Kalahari-Wisconsin Dells’ original indoor waterpark for the installation of new and exciting features. As part of a multi-million dollar renovation project, the Kalahari will introduce the first indoor SuperLOOP slides in the United States!

The three rides have trap-doors that drop out from under you and you are propelled at speeds up to 38 feet per second! One ride is an open flume with a longer straight drop while the other two are enclosed, looping rides. In order to make room for these awesome new rides, an area of the roof was raised from 50’ high to 77’ high. It was especially challenging to fit three unique rides over, through and around the existing features!

Riding the Wave

Award Winning Museum

Recently, the Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service to the Madison Children's Museum! (Madison, Wisconsin) This is the first such award given to any Wisconsin museum.

Ramaker & Associates is very proud to have been part of the team involved in designing the new facility that opened in 2010. Our staff provided engineering services required for design and construction of the pumps, piping, water treatment equipment and electrical controls to serve the new water features. The features included a Laminar Ladder Vortex, Water Dome, Roof Water Bell, Water Troughs, Water Chains, Water Spouts and Mist Bell.

Jay Peak Soon to be Open!

In just a few weeks, The Pump House at Jay Peak, Vermont will be open! One of the highlights of this 50,000-square-foot indoor waterpark will be La Chute, a diabolical water slide that will send riders into an overbanked-bordering-on-upside-down loop. To accommodate the 71-foot-tall slide tower, the resort had to build a vertical extension to its skylight-style glass roof. Other features include a double FlowRider surfing attraction, tube slides, body slide, kiddie slides, whirlpool spa, lazy river, activity pool, and interactive play structure with tipping bucket.

Today the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of 1 million drain covers due to possible entrapment hazards. The press release from the CPSC can be found here. RAMAKER is currently researching the specifics and we will post more information as it becomes available.

"Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product."

20,000 and Ice Cream

It all starts with 1 – job #1 that is. Our accounting department informed us yesterday that our 20,000th job was entered in the system. An incredible milestone since job number 1,000 was in 1991 and we hit number 10,000 in July 2006. That’s a lot of work in a short timeframe but, we have an awesome staff that works hard to make it all happen!

In honor of this occasion, some yummy ice cream cake showed up in the lunchroom today to the delight of many employees.

Are you doing your Waterpark Due Diligence?

Thinking of purchasing a waterpark property? Have you done your due diligence? There are many facets to the condition and maintenance of a waterpark and you don’t want to go in to a sale blind. Consider a Property Condition Assessment (PCA). PCAs are a valuable service tool for investors and developers prior to a purchase, sale, or refinance to evaluate a property’s elements, buildings and systems.

The PCA assesses the general physical condition and maintenance status of the property, and recommends repair and maintenance items considered significant for the property to continue in its current operation and/or to be restored to a good condition consistent with comparable projects of similar age. This assessment is also often performed to determine energy efficiency, operational concerns, and general facility condition.

PCA reports contain a wealth of information for the client to keep over the length of ownership. Reports include descriptive text, site photographs, interview documentation, a summary of immediate repair needs, estimated capital needs expenditure, and a variety of other information regarding the property.

The scope of work generally includes a review of construction plans and O&M manuals, a visit to the facility to characterize existing property conditions, search of state and local building department records (including interviews with local officials), and interviews with the current property owner, manager, and/or occupant.

The scope of the assessment can involve just the aquatic features, or can be expanded to include the building envelope, structural and mechanical systems, and other interior building components.

RAMAKER was recently hired to evaluate the CoCo Key waterpark in Arlington Heights, Illinois. For nearly twenty years, RAMAKER has provided a full range of due diligence services to assist banks, purchasers, and sellers with real estate transactions. RAMAKER’s broad range of in-house engineering, environmental and construction industry expertise allows PCAs to be completed accurately and efficiently.

Be prepared. Whether purchasing a new facility or looking to get a true evaluation of your facility’s current condition, do your due diligence.

Waterpark reopens after tornado

On June 6, 2010, the Splash Universe indoor waterpark in Dundee, Michigan, was damaged by a tornado. The northwestern corners of the hotel and waterpark received the most damage – including a missing section of roof. The walls and roof had been damaged by the winds and there were questions about the structure, HVAC system, pool equipment and theming. Ramaker & Associates was on site as part of the team that assessed the damage and determined what options were available to the owner.

Now, here we are, eight months later and Splash Universe is ready to re-open. It’s great to see that the decision was made to repair the facility and open again, keeping the local economy moving forward!

One of the industry’s leading publications, Aquatics International, has made some predictions for the coming year regarding items that affect the aquatics industry. All of them are definitely very important. In fact, we have spent the past several years learning, designing and participating in work related to these items, as we also recognize their significance.

ADA
Whether or not this becomes the “next VGB” we know the laws and have been incorporating these requirements into our projects for numerous years. We will be there for you as the new rules are implemented and enforced at your facility.

MAHC
Our staff has been part of the code development process through participation in MAHC technical committees. What better way to share the knowledge and experience we have gained over the past eighteen years than by becoming such a crucial part of the new code!

VGB
Our staff has assisted pool owners with VGB compliance on over 1,000 pools since December 2008. You can’t get much more experienced than that! We are here to answer your questions and be your guide through this process.

Air quality
Over ten years ago we recognized that air quality was a key element in the design of waterparks. That’s why we have MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) staff as part of our Aquatic Design division. Air and water quality go hand in hand – we know this.

Waterpark project financed through funds from abroad

We are all familiar with the lack of credit that exists in our current economy. Not only does this affect us personally, but also at work where our clients are hard-pressed to find the money to finance their next project. Ramaker & Associates has been fortunate enough to find a client with a unique way of uncovering capital for a large project located in Jay, Vermont.

The money for this project is coming from overseas and is supported through the EB-5 Immigrant Visa program. The program’s concept is that foreigners can create a path to a green card by investing in American businesses, which in turn creates U.S. jobs. Jobs like the ones in Jay, Vermont, where a new indoor waterpark (designed by Ramaker & Associates) with a retractable glass roof system is now being constructed.

Our very own Jeff Nagel, AIA, was involved in the design team for a LEED Demonstration House located in Willmar, Minnesota. Last week the newly constructed home was rated by the US Green Building Council as LEED Platinum!! A big kudos to Jeff and everyone else involved in the project on such a wonderful job!

A little background...

Each year at the Willmar campus of Ridgewater College, the carpentry program builds one to two houses. In 2009, the college was awarded a WIRED grant through the Minnesota Renewable Energy Marketplace (MNREM), and partnered with Green Lyfe, LLC to develop and build a LEED certified home in Willmar. Green Lyfe, LLC is a collaborative effort of Genesis Architects and Cities Edge Architects, involving the architectural design team of Phil Anderson, Julie Alsum, and Jeff Nagel.

The finished home will be used as a “demonstration house” which will be used to educate regional students, construction workers, and community members in the use and installation of renewable energy resources and sustainable materials. The hope is to generate additional interest in new technologies and sustainable building in the area.

Americans with Disabilities Act swimming pool guidelines signed into law

When the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1992, universal accessibility became mandated by federal law. Now, after spending years acquiring public comment, new swimming pool guidelines have been enacted. The new law splits commercial pools into two divisions: less than 300 linear feet of pool wall perimeter and more than 300 linear feet. While the law becomes effective in April 2011, existing facilities will have one additional year to come into compliance. More information can be found here.

RAMAKER & ASSOCIATES WINS CONTRACT TO DEVELOP ILLINOIS CEMETERY OVERSIGHT DATABASE

Effective in March 2010, the Illinois General Assembly enacted the Cemetery Oversight Act (COA) for protection of Illinois consumers. This act requires the development of a statewide database for all burials that occur in the state of Illinois. The database will be on the Internet, and cemeteries in Illinois will be required to enter all new interments into the database within 10 days after a burial occurs. We are proud to announce that Ramaker & Associates has been awarded the contract to develop this database! Brandon Finley, Vice President of Ramaker & Associates, said, "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to be involved in this unique project, and to help the state of Illinois ensure that their records are accurate for years to come."

Ramaker & Associates is currently working with the State of Illinois to define the scope and functionality of the system. Ramaker & Associates partnered with Yahara Software (http://www.yaharasoftware.com), a Madison, Wisconsin-based software development firm, to help execute this project. Yahara has experience developing other web-based statewide databases and will be able to utilize those skills in this project.

The system is anticipated to "go live" and be available to all Illinois cemeteries on December 1, 2010.

The Magical Water Machine — where children use water jets to shoot balls into a vortex — is one of the entertaining exhibits at the new Madison Children’s Museum, set to open Saturday, August 14th. The new $16.5 million museum, located at 100 N. Hamilton St., will feature a public area more than three times the size of the museum's former location on State Street. With a long-standing history of being “green,” the museum continues to be environmentally conscious with many of the exhibits made from local, natural, salvaged and/or repurposed materials. The museum is hoping to become the first LEED green building certified museum in Wisconsin.

Ramaker & Associates is proud to have been a part of this endeavor through designing the recirculation and filtration system for the interactive water features.

Wisconsin Waterpark Uses Green Technologies to Significantly Reduce Energy Consumption

Chaos Waterpark, named a Top Project of 2009 by the Daily Reporter and the Wisconsin Builder magazines, uses green technologies to recycle heat and reduce energy consumption. The innovative design utilized in this waterpark will not only help lessen the waterpark's impact on the environment, but will also provide the waterpark's owner with significant operating cost savings. In addition, Ramaker & Assoc helped make way for the use of a foam-type flooring for pool floors in Wisconsin as an alternate to traditional concrete flooring.

Ramaker & Associates Implements CIMS in the Historic Bellefontaine Cemetery

Bellefontaine Cemetery, in St. Louis, Missouri, was established in 1849 and has more than 314 acres with 14 miles of roads. They had been using another cemetery management program, but chose to move to CIMS for its ease of use and its ability to track all of their data in one place. CIMS will integrate all their cemetery data including pictures of all the headstones and GPS locations of over 5000 trees. They are expecting to go live with CIMS early this summer.

CIMS Light Version 4.1 is being released to clients today and CIMS Version 4.1 will be released to clients in 2 weeks! There are many exciting enhancements to the software, many of which were made as a direct result of feedback from our clients. We always welcome comments on how we can improve CIMS to help you organize your data and run your cemeteries.

New Burial Shape

While many of the improvements pertain to both CIMS and CIMS Light, there are several changes that pertain only to the mapping functionality of CIMS: Map Labeling, New Burial Shape, Interactive Overview Map, Print a CIMS Map, and CIMS Map Tips.

Improvements that are common to both CIMS 4.1 and CIMS Light 4.1 include: Query Funeral Homes, Sort Markers Queries, Report Changes, Auto-Save a Deed or Contract, Entering Dates, Disinterment Changes, New Mobil Cell Number Entry Field, and Deed History.

These are the major changes that will be present in CIMS 4.1 and CIMS Light 4.1, but not an exhaustive list. Many other changes have been made that enhance the functionality of the software overall.

All clients currently enrolled in our maintenance and technical support program will automatically receive the CIMS or CIMS Light 4.1 update CD in the mail. Daryl directs the Aquatics Department at Ramaker & Associates, responsible for a broad range of functions including budgeting, staffing, and day-to-day operations management. He joined Ramaker & Associates in 1997 as a Project Manager in the Civil Engineering department. The first snow has already fallen in Wisconsin and we are bracing for several more inches of the fluffy, white stuff this week. Everyone is very busy at work and we all anxiously await our annual holiday party that is just weeks away. While we are excited for the fun and festivities that the holidays bring, we also want to participate in the true meaning of the season.

As the current recession and the rise in unemployment has affected us all, it is also having a profound effect on the nation’s food banks. This year, Ramaker & Associates will be collecting food donations in our office and taking them to the local Sauk Prairie Area Food Pantry. Hopefully this small act will help make someone’s holidays a little brighter.

Some specifics on local food pantries [from Feeding America’s “September 2009 Economic Impact Survey” (http://www.feedingamerica.org/). Web. 08 Dec. 2009.]:

• Rising need for emergency food is nearly universal – 99% of all participating food banks reported increases in demand for emergency food assistance over the last year.

• High unemployment across the nation is a critical factor in the rising need for emergency food.

• Food banks report that increasing demand is particularly driven by more first‐time users of the food assistance system (98% of food banks) and more newly unemployed (92%).

• Existing clients need assistance more frequently than before, according to 72% of food banks.

• More than half of food banks (56%) also report that they are seeing more children as clients.

• It’s becoming increasingly more difficult for many food banks and their agencies to meet the needs of their clients, especially when new clients arrive all the time.

• More than half (55%) of food banks reported that they or the agencies who help distribute the food they provide have had to turn people away in the last year.

• Approximately 78% of food banks also reported that they or their partner agencies have had to reduce the amount of food provided or the frequency of food distributions in their area.

Employee Owner Spotlight: Heather Dietzel

Many clients come to Ramaker & Associates for engineering services, but they don’t always get to meet the entire team who are working diligently on their project. Heather Dietzel, a Project Engineer, joined Ramaker four years ago and is an outstanding member of our Aquatic Design Team! The UW-Platteville graduate earned her Bachelor’s in Environmental Engineering and is currently a licensed E.I.T. in the state of Wisconsin as well as an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Heather is known as a team player and is responsible for projects from design through completion. Known for her attention to detail, Heather also conducts final facility inspections to ensure construction compliance and facility licensing by state and local code officials. She also utilizes her Environmental Engineering background to assist our Environmental Team in conducting Environmental Assessments. Heather has been involved with a multitude of interesting swimming pool and aquatic center projects including the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio and Mount Olympus Water & Theme Park in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. A native of Dickeyville, Wisconsin, Heather has many outside interests including hiking.

AGI invites you to take part in Earth Science Week 2009! Being held October 11-17, Earth Science Week 2009 will encourage people everywhere to explore the natural world and learn about the geosciences. “Understanding Climate,” the theme of Earth Science Week 2009, will promote scientific understanding of a timely, vital topic: Earth’s climate.

AGI hosts Earth Science Week in cooperation with sponsors as a service to the public and the geoscience community. Each year, local groups, educators, and interested individuals organize celebratory events. Earth Science Week offers opportunities to discover the Earth sciences and engage in responsible stewardship of the Earth. In the two years since then, the employees at Ramaker & Associates have truly taken the term “employee-owner” to heart. Each year Aquatics International magazine honors outstanding world-class public aquatic facilities of all varieties — including government, nonprofit and privately owned operations. This November will celebrate the eleventh annual Best of Aquatics issue.

Among this year’s winners is the Chaos Waterpark Resort in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Ramaker & Associates is the aquatic designer for the brand new 30,000 square foot, action-themed waterpark complete with entertaining water slides, activity pools, a lazy river and whirlpool!

Chaos Resort, the World’s First Comic Book Playground, is a departure from the usual “Lodge” or “Tropical” water park theme. Your child’s imagination will be let loose in the various “play zones” as they become the superhero that stops the bank heist, prevents tidal waves, or fends off alien abductions. The fun at this waterpark is not limited to just racing down the water slides. The focus is on interactive play in the waterpark and throughout the adjoining Action City Family Entertainment Center and the Metropolis Hotel.

The weather hasn’t been nice, but the crews are working through it. The second floor framing is almost complete and the third floor trusses are waiting on the ground for their turn to be installed. The major problem has been trying to keep the snow out of the building as you can see by the piles left next to the building.

The first floor wall framing is done! The field crew is putting up the interior bearing headers, once they are all installed the second floor trusses will be ready to lay on top. Fill is starting to be pushed around the back of the building. This area needs about 6’ around the entire backside of the building.

The first floor spancrete is 90% installed. They are waiting on some level ground so they can get the lift in there to finish the end of the building. The framing is coming along nicely as about 60% of the first floor is framed. The elevator shaft is stacked up to the second floor. The columns and beams in the parking garage came together nicely.

On October 2, 2008, more than 40 cemeterians from eight states gathered at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells for Ramaker & Associates’ third annual CIMS (Cemetery Information Management System) User Group Conference. Ken Grant, Bureau Director of Wisconsin Veterans Affairs, was the guest speaker this year. Ken spoke about Veteran’s rights pertaining to markers and funeral services. The foundation is now complete! The parking lot that will be constructed on the front side of the building is being backfilled. This area required fourteen feet of fill in some locations. The elevator shaft is now being stacked, it will be a four story masonry shaft. The foundation is prepped for the spancrete installation. They will be installing the columns, beams and first floor.

The walls are now set on the footings. The fill for the foundation is now complete. The foundation is approximately 40% done.

The footings for the foundation wall and the pads for the columns are being poured. This is the West side of the building. Filling is still underway along the east side.

This was the beginning of excavation. The site required 10 feet of fill on one end of the building. The fill is coming from the 30’ high hill that is located on the property. The hill will eventually have a stepped retaining wall.

On July 3, 2008, the Sauk Prairie Star published the following article titled "Ramakers visit Tanzania".

'Terry and Sandy Ramaker recently spent 17 days in Tanzania, Africa. They visited friends in Dar es Salaam, took school supplies for a private school, toured Zanzibar Island and enjoyed an 11-day picture safari ending with a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti. The trip was given as a "thank you" gift from the employees at Ramaker & Assoc., following the sale of their company to the employees.'

At the recent Wisconsin Builders Association® (WBA) Annual Convention, Ramaker & Associates received a remodeling award in the Commercial Project category of the 2007 WBA Remodeling Awards: A Cut Above the Rest.

Kaiser Promoted to Director of Building Design Services

Ramaker & Associates, Inc. congratulates James Kaiser on his promotion to Director of the Building Design Services team, a newly formed department within the company. His extensive knowledge of building planning, procedures and codes makes him a very valuable asset to any building design project.

James' areas of expertise include architectural design, specification writing, building code review and building construction administration. He will be actively participating in all aspects of the development process from the initial concept to project completion. James received his degree as an Architectural Technician from Madison Area Technical College - Madison, Wisconsin.

While under James’ direction, the Ramaker & Associates Building Design Services team was awarded a Wisconsin Builders Association’s 2007 Remodelers Award for the remodeling design of the All Stop Plaza in Lodi, Wisconsin.

On April 29, 2008, two of Ramaker & Associates' projects will receive acknowledgement as Top Projects of 2007 by the Daily Reporter and the Wisconsin Builder. The projects are Poseidon's Rage at Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin and the University Club Tower in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The projects will also be featured in the May edition of the Wisconsin Builder magazine, to be published on April 30, 2008.
